We believe that a smaller percentage of their weight would be consumed by a herbivore in comparison to a carnivore because they get more energy from what they eat, since they eat primary producers, who produce their own energy. This means that no energy is used by any other source when they get to it.

4. Environmentalists are concerned about the accumulation of the number of certain poisons in the body systems of predators. Why do you think owls, eagles, swordfish, lions, and humans are the most threatened in a community that is exposed to DDT or mercury?

We believe that predators, high on the food chain, are most threatened in a community exposed to DDT or mercury because these poisons are not broken down in animals systems, so being high on the food chain does not help, and because there are so many things that are eaten before the final prey is consumed that the poisons have a greater chance of entering it, in the beginning, middle, or end.
